...and the Garbage Award goes to....JAPAN

With Japan's large population and limited land space, landfills are not an option. The Japanese are the frontrunners when it comes to recycling their trash. Did you know that Japan recycles 50% of it's trash? The United States, while it has recycling programs in place across the country, only recycles about 22% of it's trash. The majority of it ends up in landfills.

For this weeks Trashy Tuesday challenge we're going to celebrate Japan's recycling efforts. Your challenge is to make a card (or project) that is Red and White (to represent Japan's flag) and has an Asian influence to it. You don't need to use Asian themed stamps...you can use paper, embellishments, colors, patterns, etc. Brownie points if you incorporate a recycled item on your card; be sure to indicate what your item is.

Remember, there are no time limits, vendor restrictions or other rules for the challenge. It's only for fun and inspiration. When uploading your card to Splitcoaststampers, Papercraft Planet, StampTV or any other site, please use the keyword RESQ08TT. And whenever you upload to a site or you blog, be sure to link back here using so we can all see what you've done! You can use Mr. Linky below!

3 R's

When it comes to trash remember the three R's: Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse.

I spent the afternoon at the County landfill as part of earning credits towards my state Environmental Educator's Certification. It was very interesting and I even learned a few things. One of the handouts I received stated that tires, if disposed of improperly, can be a fire hazard and a breeding ground for pests (read: rats and mosquitos). However, when ground up, tires can be used in athletic tracts instead of being thrown away which would end up taking up more space in our already overused landfills. And, did you know that a whopping 84% of household trash can be recycled?

Your Trashy Tuesday challenge is to make a card that uses either a sports theme (to represent the athletic fields) OR something that has tires/wheels (i.e. car, bicycle, train, inner-tube, etc.). You also must reuse something that is already in your trash can as an element on your card. We'll incorporate the 3 R's in our card making and paper crafts.

Remember, there are no time limits, vendor restrictions or other rules for the challenge. It's only for fun and inspiration. When uploading your card to Splitcoaststampers, Papercraft Planet, StampTV or any other site, please use the keyword RESQ07TT. challenge #13

Today's challenge is brought to you by our dear friend
Karolyn (AKA garkarlon on SCS):

Welcome to our next Res-Q "Getting Buggy With It" Challenge.
Summertime and bugs - they go hand in hand like peas and carrots. Along with bugs comes bug bites, which almost always leave welts. YUCK! My Challenge to You: Create a card using embossed dots! There are lots of techniques to create embossed dots - an embossing folder (Cuttlebug/Big Shot), a stylus, template and mousepad, ink/embossing powder - any method will work, just as long as you can see the "welts" (dimension) on your card!!

Here's my sample to hopefully inspire some ideas for you. Looking forward to seeing what you all come up with!

I LOVE TRASH!

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love trash

I have here a sneaker that's tattered and worn
It's all full of holes and the laces are torn
A gift from my mother the day I was born
I love it because it's trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love trash

I have here some newspaper thirteen months old
I wrapped fish inside it; it's smelly and cold
But I wouldn't trade it for a big pot o' gold!
I love it because it's trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love trash

I've a clock that won't work
And an old telephone
A broken umbrella, a rusty trombone
And I am delighted to call them my own!
I love them because they're trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love, I love, I love trash!

Does this sound familiar? If you spent countless hours in front of the TV watching Sesame Street like I did, you're sure to recognize this as the song that Oscar the Grouch sang. Your challenge for this weeks Trashy Tuesday is to take a line from this song and use it as your inspiration to make a card. Let's see how trashy you can be...do you love trash as much as me?

Remember, there are no time limits, vendor restrictions or other rules for the challenge. It's only for fun and inspiration. Challenge #12 "B" Happy!

MONDAY, JUNE 8th, 2009

Don’t Worry “B” Happy!

Today’s Res-Q-Challenge is brought to you by Jean (naturecoastcrafter on SCS):

Sometimes I have to remind myself just how fortunate I am and to stop and just BE in the moment. In my youth, I used to ruffle when I was told to “Have a Nice Day” or to “Be Happy.” I figured it was nobody’s business or concern how I chose to “be.” With maturity, though, I’ve learned that these sentiments have good purpose and are prescriptions for my body and my soul. So forgive me if it ruffles, but “Don’t Worry ‘B’ Happy!”

Pull out some cheery papers and colors and create something that features a B; “be” that an image that starts with the letter b or “bee”utiful embellishments or even the letter B itself. No restrictions other than to use your “B” as a focal part of your project. Then, think about sending it to someone who could use a gentle reminder to “Be Happy!”

My card’s “B” is obvious—the image is by Stampendous, “Bee Buddies;” “Bee message” also by Stampendous; designer paper by PaperTrey, 2008 Bitty Dot Basics. The embellishments are organdy ribbon and heart brads. I used basic black and white cardstock and die cut the image and frame with Labels Two Nestabilities by Spellbinders. The image was colored with Stampin’ Up Watercolor pencils and blender pen and a Gelly Roll sparkly pen. Card size: 4.25 x 5.5 inches.

Remember, there are no time limits, vendor restrictions or other rules for the challenge. It's only for fun and inspiration. When uploading your card to Splitcoaststampers, Papercraft Planet, StampTV or any other site, please use the keyword RESQ12. Stash Your Trash!

No matter how green we try to be...reuse...recycle...there's always some form of trash left over. We always end up throwing some things away in a trash can, bag, or other container to keep until collection day rolls around.

Your challenge is to make a container to "stash your trash". It can be an altered soup can, a fry box, an altered paint can/lunch box, a tin container, a decorated bag, etc. Anything that can be used to "stash your trash" is acceptable for this challenge. Use your creative imagination! The sky's the limit on this one, use decorative papers, embellishments, ribbon, glitter, stickers - whatever you'd like to decorate your flashy, trashy container. Brownie points if you incorporate a recycled item or include something green on your project. I was visiting a friend in Massachusetts this weekend and did not have time to make an example for this challenge but I know y'all will come up with some fabulous creations.

Remember, there are no time limits, vendor restrictions or other rules for the challenge. It's only for fun and inspiration.
