...and the Garbage Award goes to....JAPAN

With Japan's large population and limited land space, landfills are not an option. The Japanese are the frontrunners when it comes to recycling their trash. Did you know that Japan recycles 50% of it's trash? The United States, while it has recycling programs in place across the country, only recycles about 22% of it's trash. The majority of it ends up in landfills.

For this weeks Trashy Tuesday challenge we're going to celebrate Japan's recycling efforts. Your challenge is to make a card (or project) that is Red and White (to represent Japan's flag) and has an Asian influence to it. You don't need to use Asian themed stamps...you can use paper, embellishments, colors, patterns, etc. Brownie points if you incorporate a recycled item on your card; be sure to indicate what your item is.

Remember, there are no time limits, vendor restrictions or other rules for the challenge. It's only for fun and inspiration. When uploading your card to Splitcoaststampers, Papercraft Planet, StampTV or any other site, please use the keyword RESQ08TT. 3 R's

When it comes to trash remember the three R's: Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse.

I spent the afternoon at the County landfill as part of earning credits towards my state Environmental Educator's Certification. It was very interesting and I even learned a few things. One of the handouts I received stated that tires, if disposed of improperly, can be a fire hazard and a breeding ground for pests (read: rats and mosquitos). However, when ground up, tires can be used in athletic tracts instead of being thrown away which would end up taking up more space in our already overused landfills. And, did you know that a whopping 84% of household trash can be recycled?

Your Trashy Tuesday challenge is to make a card that uses either a sports theme (to represent the athletic fields) OR something that has tires/wheels (i.e. car, bicycle, train, inner-tube, etc.). You also must reuse something that is already in your trash can as an element on your card. We'll incorporate the 3 R's in our card making and paper crafts.

Remember, there are no time limits, vendor restrictions or other rules for the challenge. It's only for fun and inspiration. I LOVE TRASH!

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love trash

I have here a sneaker that's tattered and worn
It's all full of holes and the laces are torn
A gift from my mother the day I was born
I love it because it's trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love trash

I have here some newspaper thirteen months old
I wrapped fish inside it; it's smelly and cold
But I wouldn't trade it for a big pot o' gold!
I love it because it's trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love trash

I've a clock that won't work
And an old telephone
A broken umbrella, a rusty trombone
And I am delighted to call them my own!
I love them because they're trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love, I love, I love trash!

Does this sound familiar? If you spent countless hours in front of the TV watching Sesame Street like I did, you're sure to recognize this as the song that Oscar the Grouch sang. Your challenge for this weeks Trashy Tuesday is to take a line from this song and use it as your inspiration to make a card. Let's see how trashy you can be...do you love trash as much as me?

Stash Your Trash!

No matter how green we try to be...reuse...recycle...there's always some form of trash left over. We always end up throwing some things away in a trash can, bag, or other container to keep until collection day rolls around.

Your challenge is to make a container to "stash your trash". It can be an altered soup can, a fry box, an altered paint can/lunch box, a tin container, a decorated bag, etc. Anything that can be used to "stash your trash" is acceptable for this challenge. Use your creative imagination! The sky's the limit on this one, use decorative papers, embellishments, ribbon, glitter, stickers - whatever you'd like to decorate your flashy, trashy container. Brownie points if you incorporate a recycled item or include something green on your project. I was visiting a friend in Massachusetts this weekend and did not have time to make an example for this challenge but I know y'all will come up with some fabulous creations.

Remember, there are no time limits, vendor restrictions or other rules for the challenge. It's only for fun and inspiration. ONE MAN'S TRASH IS ANOTHER MAN'S TREASURE

We've all heard the phrase "one man's trash is another man's treasure". When I think of this phrase, I cannot help but think of my boyfriend Joe. Not that he is trash mind you...but because his ex-wife thought the "grass was greener" and threw away their 12 year marriage. While I feel bad that Joe was put in this situation, I am grateful for his ex's indiscretion and for creating the opportunity for Joe and I to meet. Her "trash" is now my "treasure".

My challenge for you today is to make a treasure out of trash. Start with a card you've already made...you know, one that you never really liked or one that was maybe missing something so it's in a scrap pile (I have a bunch of these cards). If you don't have an old card, use scraps and start from there. Now, re-work your trashy card, snazz it up, show it some love, give it attention...brownie points if you make it a thank you card. When you're finished, send this little treasure out to someone speical in your life.

Remember, there are no time limits, vendor restrictions or other rules for the challenge. It's only for fun and inspiration. Let's Talk Trash!

Sorry I'm posting this late y'all...the whole job thing gets in the way sometimes.
Anyway, I finally made it and today we're going to talk trash. Now, I'm not encouraging spreading rumors or lies about people, but let's talk trashy to make someone laugh or even raise a few eyebrows.
Your challenge today is to use a funny, humorous, twisted, off-color sentiment on your card. If you don't have any stamps that fit this category, you can combine a couple stamps to create a sentiment or just make one up on your own. Let's have fun and talk trash.

Here's my example:

recipe:
stamps: I Brake For Stamps
ink: Archival Jet Black, Kiwi Kiss, Watercolor Crayons
paper: Regal Rose, Kiwi Kiss, WW, SU! Raspberry Tart DSP
accessories: Dew Drops, Ribbon, Dimensionals, Liquid Applique, Stickles
Remember, there are no time limits, vendor restrictions or other rules for the challenge. It's only for fun and inspiration. POOR WHITE TRASH

Welcome to the second installment of Trashy Tuesday! This week, we're going to find our inner white trash.

Welcome to the second installment of Trashy Tuesday! This week, we're going to find

According to Wikipedia:

White trash is an American English pejorative term referring to individual or groups of lower social class white skinned people that the speaker considers to lack cultural capital. It is most frequently used as a slur to describe financially, economically or culturally disadvantaged Caucasians. The term white trash originated in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area during the 1820s post-revolutionary war reconstruction boom. (Who knew?) The term white trash first came into common use inthe 1830s as a pejorative used by upper class United States southerners of all races against financially disadvantaged caucasians.

Think back to when we first started stamping...we didn't have all the latest and greatest gadgets, embellishments, and accessories. I was always looking for ways to add some pizazz to my cards. For this week's challenge I want you to roll up your sleeves and find your inner white trash.

Your challenge is to make a card that must include a tattered piece of white cardstock as your background...for mine, I spritzed a piece with water and crumpled in into a ball and worked it until it was distressed to my liking. You can tear yours, crumple it, stomp on it, run it over with the car...as long as it's tattered somehow. There's also a catch...you cannot use any modern embellishments or tools (punches are ok but no added bling, rhinestones, cuttlebug/nesties, dewdrops, etc.); keep it simple...you're limited to using only image stamp and one sentiment.

Here's my "poor white trash" example:

recipe:
stamps: Impression Obsession, Rubber Soul
paper: Tempting Turquoise, Kiwi Kiss, Whisper White
ink: Archival Jet Black, Tempting Turquoise (SU! Marker), Green Galore (SU! Marker)
accessories: paper clips, circle punches, dimensionals

IT'S NOT TRASH...IT'S ART!!!

Welcome [friends] to the debut of Trashy Tuesday here at the ResQ Challenge! I’m so excited to be adding Trashy Tuesday our line-up and look forward to seeing the “trash” you create. If you ask my ResQ peeps who the “naughty” one of the group is, 10 to 1 they say, “Jacqueline”. So, leave it to me to stir things up a bit. My sense of humor can be a little off the wall at times (some may call it twisted or deviant) but let’s just say I just like to make people laugh. I laugh at myself for scrutinizing each piece of trash before I actually throw it away...afterall, I could maybe use it for something. That's how I came up with the idea for Trasy Tuesdays.

So, here’s what I’m thinking…Trashy Tuesdays will incorporate a trash related theme or item into the challenge each week. We may use actual trash, we might “talk trash”, or we may come up with something inspired by trash. The main point is to have fun and add a little humor to your Tuesdays. And remember, look at it as art, not trash!

For our first challenge use something that you would normally throw away without a second thought. In my example below I used the little container that Piper's (my Pomeranian) Frontline flea treatment comes in. As I was getting ready to throw it in the trash can, my hand suddenly jerked back before I actually let go of the little container. Now, it's a little vase instead.

That's your challenge this week...use your imagination and creativity and incorporate your own trashy twist to your card. Can't wait to see what y'all come up with.

recipe:
stamps: SU! Heartfelt Thanks
paper: garden green, tangerine tango, apricot appeal
ink: tangerine tango, apricot appeal
accessories: ribbon, dew drops, dimensionals, Cuttlebug Paisley embossing folder,
SU Top Note

Remember, there are no time limits, vendor restrictions or other rules for the challenge. It's only for fun and inspiration.
